Suspension for a beam-type axle of a road vehicle

A vehicle suspension comprises a beam axle 14 supported from the vehicle frame by pairs of parallel upper and lower longitudinal links 22, 26 and 22, 25, either the upper or the lower links 25, 26 being interconnected by a transverse tube stabilizer 38 within which is accommodated a torsion bar 52 anchored to the chassis at one end 51 and fast with the interconnected pair of links and tube at the other. The links are preferably splayed outwards at the ends and a lever 45 splined to end 51 of the torsion bar is connected to the chassis by adjustable link 48, the length of which is varied to alter the vehicle height. The upper links 22 are pivoted on arbors mounted in lugs 23 on the chassis the arrangement being such that the arbors must first be removed to dismantle each pivot assembly. The internally splined tubular ends 25a, 26a of the lower links 25, 26 are mounted on splined tubular arbors 31, 34 which pivot on bearings in lugs 27 on the chassis. Mounted on the inner ends 31a, 34a of the arbors 31, 34 are flanged members 31b, 34b which are interconnected by the tube 38 which provides strong anti-roll characteristics. The design of the lower link assembly is such that it cannot be dismantled until tube 38 is removed. The end 53 of the torsion bar is splined to engage the inside of arbor 31 the bar passing through tube 38 and arbor 34.
