Relates to a scribing device of the kind in which a writing instrument is carried in an aperture 12 in a member 11, and is directed over the surface to be written upon by a tracer pin 22 movable in character grooves in a template and by a tail pin (18, Fig. 6) movable in a groove parallel with the line of lettering. The writing instrument is retained in the aperture 12 by a pair of clamping levers (28, Figs. 8, 9) of angle section arranged with their webs in abutting relation and received in a groove (27) on the side of the device. The outwardly directed flanges 29 of the levers lie against the outside of the device, and a spring (32) supplies the biasing force. A lever (35, Figs. 6 and 9) pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the tail bar 14 of the device, has a foot or leg (36) which can be projected through the body of the device to lift the writing instrument away from the surface to be marked. The angular position of the arm carrying the tracer pin 22 can be adjusted in relation to the body-plate 10 of the device to vary the inclination of letters drawn. A threaded spacer screw 51 is provided to obtain the desired spacing of the point of the writing instrument, and is particularly necessary when the writing instrument is a pen.
