A tractor or other heavy duty vehicle, e.g. an earth working machine has a solid axle 1 pivoted to the vehicle at 2 and mounting at its ends by bearings 17 a wheel 12. The wheel hub 3 rotates within a casing 5 attached to the axle, and is rigid with a gear 4 which meshes with a gear 7 which receives its drive through a shaft 19, couplings 13 and an output shaft 8 of a differential gear disposed above the axle. In a modification, the driven wheels may be steerably mounted upon king pins carried at the ends of the axle which is non-pivotally mounted upon the vehicle (Fig. 3, not shown). The differential gear may be mounted so that the axes of the gears 7 and 4 are vertically disposed, or so that the plane through them inclines forwardly (Fig. 4, not shown).
