Process for extraction of oil from oil-bearing vegetable material

Oil is extracted from oil-bearing vegetable materials by a process comprising the steps of (1) comminuting the material to pass a mesh size of at least 20 (U.S. Sieve Series), (2) slurrying the solids with hexane to yield a slurry containing at least 40 grams of solid per litre of slurry, (3) heating the slurry to 80-125 DEG C. at a pressure in excess of the vapour pressure of hexane at the operating temperature, (4) holding the slurry at said temperature and pressure for at least 1 minute, and (5) separating the resulting solvent-oil solution from the residue of solid material. Materials treated include corn germ, sunflower seeds, soy beans, peanuts and whole corn.
