Improvements in and relating to hand-drying apparatus

[Also in Division A5] A hand dryer comprises a feed drum 9 which advances a length of paper towel to a position of use and a blower 16 directing streams of warm air to opposite sides of the towel in its position of use, the feed drum and the blower being controlled by a timing circuit operated by a photo-electric cell 20, press button or pedal, and a bin 19 or waste disposal unit being provided for disposal of the towel. The dryer comprises a casing 1 having a removable supply reel 6 of paper towelling, a feed drum 9 having a high friction surface and blowers 16 which direct air through ducts 17 fitted with heaters 18 on to the towelling in its position of use. On interrupting a beam of light between a source 21 and the photo-electric cell 20, associated circuits which include a timing device are energized to cause actuation of the blowers and the heaters and energization of a solenoid (22, Fig. 4) for a predetermined period. When energized, the solenoid raises a lever (23) from a depression (24) in a cam (25) rotatable with the feed drum 9 to free the feed drum for rotation, the lever then actuating a microswitch (26) so that an electric motor is energized to rotate the feed drum. As the feed drum rotates it draws towelling T from the supply reel so that a length of towelling hangs between the air ducts in its position of use. On deenergization of the solenoid the lever (23) falls back into the cam depression (24) when they are next in register to cause opening of the microswitch and de-energization of the electric motor so that the feed drum ceases to rotate. After a predetermined interval the blowers and heaters are de-energized and the lid of a bin 19 disposed beneath the dryer opens under the control of the timing device for receiving the used length of towel which is torn away. In a modification, a wash basin having a sink disposal unit controlled by the timing device may be provided beneath the dryer for disposal of the used towel lengths.
