A curve 1 the co-ordinates of which it is re quired to calculate is projected on to a fixed table 2 and successive points on the graph then located beneath an index mark on a plate 11 by first moving a carriage 5 using an operating knob 13 until the point on the graph lies in the line of a scale 10, the scale 10 being then moved until the index mark overlies the required point on the graph. The movements of the carriage 5 are sensed by measuring means 9 e.g. adapted to code or count pulses positioned above a coded scale, further measuring means 12 reading the transverse movements of the plate 11 so that the X and Y co-ordinates of the point measured are recorded in the measuring means 9, 12 respectively.
