Rollers 6 and 7 are nip rollers and the shaft of roller 7 is connected to a pneumatically operated disc brake to stop the web. Two looping rollers 18 and 19, fixed relative to each other on a member 17, Fig. 1 (not shown), allow the web to be fed continuously to the apparatus when the web is stopped in the treating zone. A two-way pneumatic cylinder 11, Fig. 1 (not shown), biases the rollers 18 and 19 to the left in Fig. 2 when the web is advancing through the treating zone. When the web is halted in the treating zone by operating the disc brake on roller 7, air is fed to both ends of the pneumatic cylinder 11 to substantially equalize the air pressure, so that the rollers 18 and 19 are drawn to the right by the pull of the web on roller 19, thereby increasing the length of web travel entering the treating zone and decreasing the length of web travel leaving the treating zone.
