1,199,865. Fuel cell electrodes. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 19 Feb., 1968 [20 Feb., 1967], No. 8019/68. Heading H1B. Porous Ni electrodes for fuel cells are oxidized at 500-800‹ C., impregnated with a solution of a cobalt salt and re-oxidized at 250-550‹ C. to form a mixed oxide of Ni and Co on the internal and external surfaces of the electrode. The impregnating solution may be an aqueous or alcoholic solution of CoCl 2 , CoSO 4 , Co(OH) 2 or, preferably, Co(NO 3 ) 2 . The electrode may be. monoporous or biporous and may have been pretreated with an aqueous or alcoholic solution of LiNO 3 or LiOH. The oxidized electrodes are used as cathodes in fuel cells with oxygen as oxidant and an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkanolamine as electrolyte. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,014,587.
