[Also in Division A1] A machine for cutting tobacco leaves and separating cut leaves from stalks &c. comprises a cutting chamber 6 having leaf feed opening 24, a vertically journalled rotary drum 2 carrying radial knives 30 and an outlet opening 26 provided with grid forming bars 28, the outlet 26 communicating with an annular separating chamber 23 extending around all or the greater part of the periphery of the cutting chamber 6 and in which separating chamber 23 an upwardly induced air flow carries the lighter cut tobacco upwardly to an outlet 22 while the heavier stalks, veins, &c. fall through an annular discharge aperture 31. Air flow in the separating chamber is induced by a suction at the cut tobacco outlet 22 and by an impeller 14 located beneath the cutting chamber 6 and communicating through openings 19 with the separating chamber 23. The embodiment shown includes a further, fine cutting chamber 7 located above the coarse cutting chamber 6 and separated therefrom by a partition 8, the upper chamber 7 having a gridded outlet 27, 29 and rotary knives 33. A vertically adjustable, upwardly tapered cap 9 is located above the upper chamber 7 and assists in providing a feed opening 32 for this chamber 7. Heavier portions of coarse cut tobacco within the upper tapered portion of the separating channel 23 fall through the feed opening 32, in dependence on the vertical adjustment of the cap 9 which controls the cross-section and hence the degree of suction within the upper part of the separating chamber, to be further comminuted while lighter portions pass onwardly to the outlet 22.
