A crop store comprises: a compressing device that feeds crop under high pressure, i.e. substantially free of air, to an inlet in the base of the store. A movable cover keeps the crop in a compressed state, and a discharging device discharges the crop through an outlet at the base of the store. The first form of store, Fig. 1, has a shaft 2, supported between side walls 1, upon which is mounted a pair of support arms 3 that carry crankshafts 4 and 5. The crankshafts, on rotation, reciprocate tined supports 7 mounted between supports 3 so that as the supports 3 are lowered, crop deposited on a floor between walls 1 is raked into a worm conveyer 11 that feeds the compressing device. A ram 13 forces the crop into movable cutters 20 and further into the crop store under pressure of the crop already stored. A worm conveyer 28 connected by an omnidirectional joint 26A to a worm conveyer 26 can discharge crop through outlet 25A on to a discharge conveyer 29. An electric motor 30 provides the power to the various driven components. The crop store shown in Fig. 3 has an alternative form of compressing device comprising an arm 71 driven to follow the kidney-shape locus by being pivotally mounted between gear wheels 66 and pivotally mounted via arm 73 to the wall of the store 63. A flap 74A closes the inlet to the store. The discharging device is a vertical worm whose diameter increases towards the top of the store. The worm is provided with cutters 79 disposed at equal distances from each other and, at regular intervals along the worm, beating members 81 connected via chains. These chains increase in length towards the top of the store. A cover 83, slidable on the upper portion of shaft 78 is located in four U- shaped guides 88 spaced 90 degrees from each other around the containing wall. Within the guides travel the twin rollers 87 mounted in supports connected to the cover. Adjustable scrapers mounted on the supports extend into the guides. Ballast may be added to the cover to increase the amount of compression on the stored crop.
