Material is fed into silo 1 from endless conveyer 27, the material falling at 26 in front of piston 20 driven from motor 24. The material is thus compressed and fed by the pusher past slide 28A into the silo. The silo is formed with cover 8 which rests on top of the material, the cover being raisable by cable 10 actuated by winch 12 and provided with a rubber seal to seal the silo. Additionally, holes are provided in the cover so that air may be extracted from the silo by pump 17 via tubes 16. The material is discharged by bodily-rotating screw 36 which delivers to a fan which blows the material through pipe, 37 opening 38 and duct 39 on to discharge conveyer 40. The silo is provided with a walk 7 and a roof 5.
