1,180,147. Rolling. COMPAGNIE DES ATELIERS ET FORGES DE LA LOIRE (ST. CHAMOND FIRMINY, ST. ETIENNE, JACOB - HOLTZER), and HYDROMECANIQUE ET FROTTEMENT. 10 Nov., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966], No. 51334/67. Heading B3M. [Also in Division G3] Apparatus for regulating the thickness of a rolled product is positioned in a roll stand either between a lower chock and the roll housing or between an upper chock and a screw-down, and comprises a piston 1 which is acted on by a chock E and moves within a support 2. The space between the piston and support is filled with a liquid 5 into which extends the end of a plunger piston 4. The position of the piston 4 is controlled by a servovalve 7 and an hydraulic actuator 6. The servovalve is in turn operated by a unit 13 in response to the measured position of piston 4 and the pressure of the liquid 5. Any change in the roll gap leads to a movement of the piston 1, and a proportional change in the liquid pressure. The piston 4 is thus caused to move axially. The liquid pressure is measured at 11, and the actual position of the piston 4 is measured at 10 by a position detector. Signals corresponding to these measurements, together with a zero shift signal, are fed to the unit 13. The unit controls the servovalve 7 such that the piston 4 is moved in a sense to compensate for the original change in pressure in the liquid 5. A diaphragm 12 positioned between the chock E and piston 1 transmits vertical loads while absorbing lateral and rocking forces produced by the chock. The liquid 5 consists of a mixture of 20 parts by weight of calcium-soap grease, 10 parts of nicron size graphite and 2 parts of sodium tri-stearate. A second plunger piston may be used which is forced out of its bore in the event of excessive rolling pressure.
