The compounds disclosed herein are defined by the formula WHEREIN R is hydrogen or methyl. These compounds are found to be particularly useful as bacteriostats, as lamprecides and as differential fish toxicants. The compounds are found to be particularly effective for such purposes because of the nitro group in the 5' position and because of the tertiary-butyl group in the 3 position.
