Carbon black is mfd. from a hydrocarbon (mist.) by (a) forming a stream of a mixt. of combustible gas and a gas supporting combustion, and causing this to surround a central stream of the hydrocarbon (mixt.) to be cracked and partially burnt; (b) directing an annular stream of a gas richer in oxygen than air between the central stream and the combustible stream, and reacting the aggregate of these streams; and (c) rapidly cooling the mixt. coming from the reaction and sepg. the contained solid particles.
