In the Fig. 3A system, spray nozzles 6 above and below hot object 7 are directed at an angle α to the object path 10. Other water spray nozzles 6-1, .... 6-n provide the main cooling effect and laminar flow jets 5 provide the acoustic coupling for inspection by reflection or through-transmission of ultrasonic pulses or continuous waves. Laminar flow jets may be used instead of spray nozzles 6-1, .... 6-n. Spray production (Fig. 1). Water at 2-10 Kg/cmSP2/SP pressure is ejected from inner nozzle 2 having a tip bevel angle α 1 =45‹-180‹. Compressed air at 1-2 Kg/cmSP2/SP pressure is supplied to outer nozzle I having a tip bevel angle α 2 =60‹-180‹. Nozzle 2 is threaded in nozzle 1 so that the separation of the two tips can be adjusted to vary the spray.
