Power generating unit flue gas washing plant for removing e.g. sulphur compounds from flue gases. The conventional existing cooling system are used additionally for cooling the flue gases to a temperature at which it is possible to precipitate the majority of toxic substances especially the sulphur compounds. Additional flue gas cooling plates are installed into a dry cooling tower over the cooling surfaces used for steam condensation. The flue gases are cooled in these elements in closed channels close to the ambient temperature. At the outlet of these elements are separators in which the sulphur diode is scrubbed from flue gases by means of water and removed downwards in a channel. The cleaned and cooled flue gases are mixed into the cooling air system, and the sulphur dioxide separated can be passed on for conversion into sulphur acid in the chemical industry. The circulation of air within the tower improves owing to higher temperature differences.
