Prostanoic acid mixed anhydrides of formula (I): (where A =-(CH2)3-, -CO-CH=CH-, -CO-CH2-CH-, OH R and R1 = H, CH3 or C2H5; R11 = alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl or aralkyl contg. is not 10 C atoms; Y = -(CH2)3-, -CH2CH2CH(OH)-, CH=CH-CH-OH, =CH-CH-CH- or CH2CH2CO-; Z = -CH2CH2- or CH=CH- and the symbol represents a bond in the alpha- or beta-configuration), are inters. for the prepn, of prostanoic esters. (I) give an easier route to the esters than known methods, and are themselves easy to prepare.
