The jack has a flat bag (1) of flexible and impermeable material, whose lower face bears against a support, while the upper one supports the load. Gas under pressure is supplied via an orifice to the bag interior, so as to inflate it and force the faces apart. The support can be in the form of a flat truck (3), and there can be a reinforced sole plate on the bag top face. The bag can have two parallel flat walls forming the top and bottom faces, and a peripheral wall in the form of a bellows. The gas under pressure can be supplied by a vehicle exhaust, and the control valve can shut the orifice, connect the bag to the pressure source, or vent it to atmosphere.
