The latter runs at a speed greater than that of the rock pieces whilst they are on the shoot. A roller 25 presses the rock pieces into engagement with the belt 21. By this means the rock pieces are accelerated and are thus separated to an extent which facilitates automatic sorting. The shoot is made of a heavy cast material of iron based cobalt nickel alloy of 1 inch thickness. A lower portion 8 is formed with corrugations to guide the rock pieces. The roller 25 (see Division F2) comprises discs 26 of neoprene (Fig. 2, not shown). In a modification (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), the roller 25 and the conveyer roller 22, are fluted so as to conform with the grooves in the shoot part 18.
