A vacuum source produces an air flow indicated by arrows 25 which causes the meat-free casing 29 to pass round a first wheel 17 and a second wheel 35. Tension is applied to the casing by the circumferential speed of the wheel 35 being greater than that of the wheel 17, causing the casing to be broken into fragments F. The vacuum is maintained by pivoted flap valves 43, 45, a spring-loaded shoe 46 and a seal 51, and the wheels 17, 35 have perforations to allow air to flow through them. Air nozzles 63 remove the casing fragments F from the wheel 35, which are discharged to a receptacle or conveyor e.g. an air duct.
