Intermediate for the synthesis of zeaxanthins, xanthophylls, and 3-{62 -carotene

Method by which zeaxanthins, xanthophylls and 3-oxo- beta -carotene can be synthesized from the condensation product of mesityl oxide and aceto-acetic ester as well as new and novel intermediates produced in the synthesis. Zeaxanthin and xanthophyll are known coloring agents for foodstuffs, including beverages, pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations.
