The metal is preferably steel or lead and the spheres have a diameter in the range 0À5 mm. to 1À5 mm. The platen may be a hollow cylinder completely filled with the spheres or two coaxial cylinders with the annulus between them filled with the spheres. Further sound absorption can be achieved by mounting the platen on rubber bushes.
