The prodn., processing, transport, storage, distribution and utilisation systems used for natural gas and for synthetic gas (e.g. town gas or synthesis gas) can be integrated by operating them with a mixed gas contng. =90 vol. % CH4+H2, with an H2:CH4 ratio between 0:1 and 3:1 (pref. between 2:3 and 3:2). The costs involved in changing over from one gas supply system to another are eliminated; the capacity of existing synthetic gas systems can be increased to deal with newly found natural gas reserves, and natural gas systems can be supplemented with synthetic gas without the need to convert the latter into substitute natural gas.
