Roll feeder for wire rod - where idling feed roll is continuously rotated even when feeder is empty

The transport of continuous rolled prods. using a feeder contg. one driven roll and one idling roll; the idling roll is mounted on a pivot arm so it can be raised or lowered. The novelty is that the idling roll is continuously in contact with either the driven roll or the rolled prod. passing through the feeder; and only when the front end of a new product or rod runs into the feeder is the idling roll moved briefly away from the driven roll. The inlet and outlet sides of the feeder are pref. fitted with photocells employed to raise or lower the idling roll. The method may be used e.g. for feeding rolled rod leaving the last stand of a rolling mill to a looper. The idling rolls is permanently rotated so there is no danger of jamming or rod breakage when the front end of a rolled rod enters the feeder; such as mishaps can occur if the idling roll is stationary.
