The machine (10) is provided with an electric motor (15) driving a pump (16) which supplies water to the jet (13) for washing the dishes. When the dishes have been washed a flap (24) in the pump delivery pipe (14) is turned through 90 deg. by an electromagnet (25). The water is then deflected to the outlet pipe (27). At the same time a mechanical linkage with the swivelling inlet pipe (20) rotates it through 180 deg. The inlet is deflected downwards so that fine particles of food which have passed through the strainer (17) are sucked into the pump and discharged through the outlet pipe (27).
