New trialkoxy- and tricycloalkoxy-acetonitriles have formula (RO)3C-CN (I) (where R are opt. different and each R is a cycloaliphatic or a 1C- or 4C aliphatic gp.). The new (I) and known (I; in which each R is an opt. different aliphatic or cycloaliphatic gp.) are prepd. by reacting a tri-halogen-acetonitrile having formula (X)3C-CN (II) (where each X is an opt. different halogen atom) with an alcoholate R-O-Z (III) (where Z is an alkali metal or the equiv. of an alkaline earth metal atom) in the presence of aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons, ethers and/or tert. aliphatic amines as reaction media. The new and known (I) are intermediates for the prodn. of dyes, imino-ortho-esters, ortho-carbonate esters, guanidinium salts and pesticides. Pure (I) are obtd. in good yields. Trimethoxy-acetonitrile was prepd. in 56% yield by reacting trichloroacetonitrile with MeONa in Et2O.
