Prepn. of 1,3,5-triaza-2,4,6-triketocyclohexane-1,3,5-triacetic acid esters of formula (I) in mixt. with 1,3,5-triaza-2,4,6-triketocycloheptane-3,5-diacetic acid esters of formula (II). (where each R is 1-30C alkyl or 5-6C cyclo alkyl) by reaction of alkali cyanates or alkaline earth cyanates with haloacetic acid esters of formula X-CH2-COOR (X = Cl or Br) comprises reacting the cyanates and haloacetic acid esters in molar ratio 1:1- 1.5:1 either (a) at 20-150 degrees C in the presence of 0.01-5 wt.% of a tert. base as catalyst (based on the amt. haloacetate) or (b) at 20-80 degrees C in the presence of an aprotic solvent and in the presence or absence of the catalyst named in (a). (II), opt. also when in mixt. with (I) are inters in the prepn. of pharmaceuticals plant protecting agents and stabilisers for the plastics industry. (II) are also base components in the prepn. of polycondensation resins e.g. by reaction with di- and polyfunctional amines and can be used to reduce the flammability of easily inflammable materials.
