Articles such as textiles which have been treated with volatile organic solvents are dried in a closed vacuum chamber or drum (1). The solvent gas enclosing the articles passes in a circuit from the goods over a heat exchange element (5) and back to the goods. The same solvent gas removed from the circuit is compressed outside the chamber in a condenser (8) and heated then fed as the heating medium through the inside of the heat exchanger element (5). The solvent gases which circulate through the machine where they are used for drying are thus heated by the heat content of the gases drawn off from the processing chamber and gas circuit, this heat content being increased by the compression warmth.
