A baling press has a press plate (20) movable up and down in a container in relation to a base plate for compacting paper waste for baling. A device for discharging a bale through a door (14) of the container has an angled pull rod (34, 35, 36) with one leg (36) connected pivotally (33, 37) to a rockable bottom part (30) pivotally mounted (31, 32) to the frame of the press. The other leg (35) of the pull rod has a hook (38) engageable with the press plate (20). When the press plate (20) is raised after compaction of a bale it lifts the pull rod (34) which in turn causes the bottom part (30) to rise as shown, in dashed lines. The initial movement of the bottom part (30) is caused by abutment of the pull rod against a projection (41) on the bottom part, providing increased force for the initial breaking away of the highly compacted waste from the internal walls of the container of the press. When the door (14) is closed, a rod (43) acts on the pull rod (34) to hold the hook (38) out of engagement with the press plate. The press plate and the hydraulic cylinders which move it are mounted on a carriage movable to a position clear of the container. IMAGE
