The knife sharpening device for household use has a sharpening wheel (1) mounted on an electric motor driven spindle (2). This wheel is a solid disc. with two sloping sides. Each side has a pattern of radial ribs, or may be roughened by e.g. sandblasting. These sloping sides are hardened by may be covered with a hard chromium plating so that they are harder than the material of the knives. The wheel is enclosed by a protective housing (8) which incorporates slots (6) and support surfaces (7) acting as guides for the knife blades. One of the slots is at an obtuse angle to the wheel to permit point contact between the knife edge and wheel.
