Benzodipyran salts (Ie with organic or inorganic cations which have water-solubility of 3 wt/wt. % (pref. 0.5 wt/wt. %) at 20-50 degrees C are new (where at least one gp. R is an organic or inorganic cation giving the necessary solubility; the other may be H). The cpds. are antiallergics which inhibit the release or action of pharmacological mediators resulting from specific antigen/antibody reactions e.g. combination of a reagininic antibody with a specific antigen. They are used to treat allergic asthma (including intrinsic asthma), hay fever, urticaria etc. (I) are absorbed more slowly or have longer duration of activity and have less side-effects (e.g. broncho-constriction when administered by inhalation) than disodium cromoglycate or the disodium salt or free acid corresp. to (I). They are administered orally, rectally or by oral or nasal inhalation in daily doses of 0.1-1000mg, esp. 0.5-50 mg administered as several unit doses (e.g. 1-3 unit doses). In treatment of hay fever doses of 0.1-1mg are administered 1-8 time daily.
