Steriliser unit comprising a housing around a low pressure mercury UV discharge tube eliminates shadow areas so that sterilisation is more effective. The UV tubes (13,14,15,16) are arranged parallel to the walls (2,3) of the steriliser (1). The walls (2,3) are covered with reflecting material (17,18) and the base (5) and lid (4) have shaped reflectors (19,20,21) mounted inside them. The tubes are mounted closer to their respective reflecting surfaces than they are to each other. The steriliser is equipped with ventilation ports which are protected by desiccators, the cooling is fan powered. The side and other reflectors are so designed that the sterilising UV rays from the lamps are spread to cover the central area of the unit (23) which contains the sample on the tray (10), from all angles.
