The shaft between the steering wheel and the steering gear, has a coupling (19) between the two parts (7a,7b) of the spindle and a setting motor (14) for driving that associated with the steering gear. The housing of the setting motor (14) is attached to one part (7a,7b) of the spindle while its armature is coupled to the other oart (7b,7a). Pref. the coupling (19) between the two parts (7a,7b) of the spindle has a coupling disc prevented from rotation but able to slide axially relative to the spindle and having pins fitting into holes in a stop plate (18) attached to the armature of the setting motor (14). The coupling disc is released by an electromagnet operating against a spring bias.
