The system separates material in bulk according to particle size using a sieve, the material being positively moved in the transport direction over a stationary sieve (3). The mechanism providing this movement has a constant clearance from the sieve equal to or greater than the largest particle dia. which can pass through the latter. Water can be sprayed over the whole length of the sieve and the transport mechanism, and the latter can be vibrated in a vertical plane. The sieve can be in the form of a part-cylindrical trough, with a concentric auger working above it.
