This research gives the results of quartz particle size determinations by sieving and image analysis. When analyzing the size of same samples the two techniques produced different results, since the two sizes measuring methods measured the different aspects of particles. Four mean image analysis size definitions and their mean values multiplied by a shape factor (form factor) were obtained for both number and volume-based means and these means were compared with the corresponding geometric mean of sieve fractions to find the most related image analysis size descriptor to sieving.
