1393579 Hot pressed silicon nitride NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 9 Nov 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 52445/72 Heading C7D Si 3 N 4 bodies are produced by compacting Si powder to a required shape, reaction sintering in N 2 to form a Si 3 N 4 body which is then hot pressed. The reaction sintered body is preferably infiltrated with a flux such as the oxide or nitride of Mg, Be or Ca or Al 2 O 3 or Fe 2 O 3 prior to hot pressing at 1600-1850‹C at 1¢ t.s.i. in graphite dies coated with BN. The Si powder may be mixed with 1-50% vol. of SiO 2 , SiC, graphite, BN, Al, Ti or Fe powder or fibres prior to compaction. The hot pressed Si 3 N 4 may then be annealed.
