A sample darrier with a tubular case and a graphite heating device are suitable for flameless atom absorption spectroscopy. The carrier is a graphite tube (1) forming an impermeable carrier and exhibiting an essentially constant resistance making it usable as a heater. It is simple to make. The casing tube (6) consists of an impermeable carbon material of larger resistance than the graphite tube fitting inside the graphite tube and extending over the length of the sample carrier. It may be made of a pyrocarbon material and may have grooved walls. The variation of measurement sensitivity is small because of the casing tube impermeability, the constant resistance of the graphite tube, and the indirect heating of the casing tube. The carrier lasts about twice as long as pyrocarbon coated graphite tubes.
