In the flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy calibration process, an unknown substance is analysed in a graphite tube. The effect of the automation of other substances which will absorb the same spectral lines has been considerably reduced. The specimen is evaporated and precipitated on the internal wall of a graphite tube maintained at a lower temp. The sample is placed in a melting crucible (26) and heated to a temp. at which the unknown substance is volatile. The graphite tube (38) is held below this temp. A protective gas current is passed through the crucible and then conducted through the graphite tube to effect the precipitation.
