The coffee maker has the correct amount of water and ground coffee fed automatically to the filter unit (2). The latter uses a filter paper in the form of a continuous web fed between supply and take-up reels between successive coffee making operations. The filter unit uses a horizontally divided filter vessel (6), with the filter paper stretched across the bottom part (8) and the supply opening (13) for the ground coffee and the water from the upper part (7) which can be raised and lowered. A filling funnel (15) extends from the supply opening, into which the ground coffee as dispensed from a supply container (4) and to which the brewing water is fed by a pipe (17). The upper part of the filter vessel has an annular rinsing spray (18) coupled to a further water pipe, for automatic cleaning.
