The lecture-theatre chair (2) is fixed, in the use position, by means of a vertical supporting column (6) which is pivotable about its axis of rotation (A) and the lower end (18) of which engages in a recess of a floor-side supporting plate (20), being centred under the sitting load. The supporting column (6) is mounted so as to be rotatable and longitudinally displaceable in the hollow space of a guide tube (5) which, for its part, is pivotable in a plane perpendicularly to the step floor (3) of the lecture theatre, at right angles to the user-side stop edge (1.2') of a table leaf (1.2), between the use position and a parked position of the chair. After relieving the load on the seating area (2.2) of the chair (2), the chair column (6) is displaced axially upwards through spring action (10), as a result of which the centring engagement between the supporting column (6) and the supporting plate (20) is eliminated. The guide tube (5) is then moved, pivoting to the left, by means of a tilting spring arrangement (17) and the chair is pivoted about a foot-side support bearing (12, 13) into a parked position, in which the backrest (2.1) is situated in the vicinity of the user-side table-leaf stop edge (1.2').
