PURPOSE:To prevent a tape deck from being damaged due to mistaking a pause for a stop and to eliminate the need for the countermeasure by displaying distinctively the running of a magnetic tape also the stop state and the pause state. CONSTITUTION:The oscillating frequency of an oscillator 6 is changed over into two stages as recording/reproduction and quick traverse/quick reverse to switch the flickering speed of a light emitting body 8. When the tape is not run, the oscillation is stopped and only a part of the light emitting element 8 is lighted by a control circuit (not shown). The switching of up-count and down-count of an up-down counter 7 is performed depending on the running direction of the magnetic tape and the order of lighting of the light emitting element 8 is made in the same direction as the running of tape. The power supply of the light emitting element 8 is supplied from a transistor(TR) 11 except for a D3. The TR11 is turned off only when the tape is in the pause state and turned on in other cases. In flickering the light emitting elements 8 one by one in order at the pause state, only the D3 of the light emitting elements 8 is flickered at the pause state.
