Fuel elements (1), in particular for boiling water reactors, have gaps (8), which extend at right angles to the rim of the cross-section and are as wide as the fuel element, in order to influence the moderator ratio. In the invention, the gaps (8) reach over the upper part of the fuel element (1), while the lower space adjoining in the longitudinal direction contains fuel rods (12) which are correspondingly shorter than the fuel rods (13) situated between the gaps. As a result, a higher fuel element power is achieved in the upper part, and thus the axial power distribution is also flattened. IMAGE
