The invention is concerned with enzyme immobilisates, and provides a modified inorganic element which is suitable for use as the supportive substrate of such an immobilisate. The modified element of the invention is in the form of a shaped element of amorphous silica treated with an alkoxy silane which contains an amino (including cyclic amino) group. The invention also provides a method of forming the modified element by treating the shaped element in a single stage with the alkoxy silane, and a method of forming an enzyme immobilisate by simply contacting the modified element with an enzyme solution. Enzyme immobilisates thus produced may be regenerated on the modified element, and may be used, for example when the enzyme is an acylase, in the selective enzymatic hydrolysis of N-acyl amino acids.
