A twist detecting device is used in detwisting appts for roped web or woven fabric. The appts. has a pair of sensing drums each with axial grooves formed on at least part of the surface. A rod is fixed to another portion of the drum and extends laterally and perpendicular to the axis. The drums are arranged side by side in parallel between which the roped web passes parallel with the grooves. The drums are supported and as the web passes through the drums rotate and the rods swing. An actuating bar is pivotally connected to the rods and moves axially in either direction. Hence the direction of the twist is indicated by movement of the bar which is made to produce an electrical signal by the interaction of the bar with two prepositioned switches. Used for detecting the direction of the twist in a roped web after processing and then quickly and accurately sending a signal to detwisting appts. to remove the twist.
