A roller gin has the ginning zone adjacent to its ginning roller 12 and the fixed ginning knife 11 cleaned by oscillation of a moving cleaning knife 13 having a rounded end 13a, giving a double-action cleaning operation. Futhermore, close to the path of the oscillating knife 13 is a vaned transfer rotor having flexible vanes 8 generating an air current helping to entrain seed cotton from a gin feeder and to impel it towards the ginning zone. Improved clearance of separated cotton seed from the ginning zone is achieved by means of a seed grid 10 which oscillates parallel to the ginning nip defined between the ginning roller 12 and the stationary ginning knife 11.
