A device for automatically marking answers to multiple-choice questions has a memory in which correct answers are stored. A paper carrying the student's answers is fed past optical reading means (34) which responds to the student's answers and produces signals representative thereof. The optically read signals are processed and compared with the correct signals stored in the memory, and the comparator output is fed to a pen recorder (28) which provides an indication on the paper opposite each correct answer. The correct answers can be set in the memory via push-buttons 40, by feeding a correctly filled-in answer paper through the device, or from a ROM. IMAGE
