ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREDifferential mounting for railroad wheels includesan axle with a wheel fitted on one end to rotate with theaxle and a second wheel carried adjacent the opposite endof the axle and mounted to rotate relative to the axle.The axle has a raised wheel seat with an axial lengthapproximately the same as the hub of the second wheelwhich is generally rectangular in cross section. Filletsdefine the inboard and outboard ends of the raised wheelseat and a steel sleeve is fitted over the raised wheelseat and includes an annular flange portion shaped toengage the outboard axle fillet. A collar carried withinthe sleeve engages the inboard fillet. Pressure platesare disposed on the inboard and outboard ends of thesleeve and include opposed stainless steel thrust bearingsurfaces contiguous to the annular side faces of the wheelhub which are surfaced with a TEFLON composite, bearingmaterial bonded thereto. The sleeve has a stainless steelouter bearing surface portion for rotating contact withthe bore of the wheel hub which is fitted with a TEFLONliner.
