An apparatus for sealing the skirt of a converter waste gas recovery system, the skirt being vertically movably disposed relative to the converter mouth, comprises: a primary sealing device adapted to enclose the mouth for sealing the gap between the skirt and mouth and mounted on the skirt along a lower edge thereof; a vertically movably disposed, secondary sealing device adapted to enclose the primary sealing device and including a sealing plate having means for sealing the sealing plate with water; first device means for vertically moving the skirt in unison with the primary sealing device; and second drive means for vertically moving the secondary sealing device independently of the first means.
