A continuous strand of sausages made by a combined filling and closing machine counts the number of sausages in a strand and when the desired number is reached actuates a pneumatic closure machine. At regular intervals a bar carries locking catches whose differently angled surfaces are encountered by loaded counting sensors as feeding proceeds, until the advancing end of the bar encounters a pneumatic cut-off switch when the right number is reached. The machine may be manually operated, e.g. when the end of a skin is approaching. ADVANTAGE - Machine operates reliably even at high speeds, producing over 60 portions of sausage/min.
