The novel compounds of the general formula I having nonlinear optical properties IMAGE in which the variables have the following meaning: X is a straight-chain or branched alkanediyl radical having 1 to 20 C atoms or X is a straight-chain or branched alkanediyl radical having 2 to 20 C atoms, the carbon chain of which is interrupted by -O-, -S- and/or -NR-; R is a hydrogen atom, a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1 to 6 C atoms or a cycloalkyl radical, Y is a non-centrosymmetrical radical containing an easily polarisable conjugated pi -electron system and at least one terminal electron acceptor group; are outstandingly suitable as nonlinear optical materials for nonlinear optical arrangements and for the preparation of polymers having nonlinear optical properties. In particular, they are used for the preparation of organopolysiloxanes having nonlinear optical properties and which contain side groups of the general formula Ia IMAGE in which the variables have the abovementioned meaning. These novel organopolysiloxanes having nonlinear optical properties are in turn outstandingly suitable for the preparation of Langmuir-Blodgett films.
